Im not sure what happened, the CPU utilization in the monitor tab showed the instance was using around 10% CPU and top didnt show any real activity. Eventually while sourcing the hdk_setup.sh script, the instance became ridiculously slow. Ssh -i ~/.ssh/.pem 2: At this point, im logged into the FPGA Developer AMI and so I started following the tutorial to create a helloworld design from scratch. The full command I was finally able to log in was: I was able to overcome this by using the “” DNS name instead. At first I was getting “ ssh: connect to host XX.XXX.XX.XXX port 22: Operation timed out” messages when I used the ssh command with the actual IP address I though my instance had. Step 1: After downloading the private key and launching the instance, I connected to it using my Mac.

Step 0: I followed the tutorial linked above for the step-by-step how to launch an AWS instance, but I chose the “FPGA Developer AMI” and the default c4.4xlarge instance type

Step -1: Ive gone through a tutorial a while ago to setup and log into an Amazon instance. Here im documenting my experience end-to-end. There is a lot of info to dig through, in different tutorials across different sites. The rollout of info today after their announcement was rather slow, and it wasnt until evening Eastern US time did all the info (github, F1 instance) finally become publicly available. I have been watching Amazon’s progress with FPGAs and was finally able to try out their newest offering. I am an avid FPGA enthusiast and have worked with FPGAs for years, programming VHDL, Verilog, and C/C++ with High Level Synthesis (HLS) tools like Impulse-C and Vivado HLS.
